Q: How do you develop a network?
A: Keep every contact. Make your list and constantly add to it.
Make sure you don't lose touch with a contact. A note, a call, a clipping,
a lunch. Keep yourself in touch and top-of-mind. When you read about a
job change, send a note of congratulations. When you hear about a contact
losing a job, be there ready to help. As they move up, you move up.
Q: How do you make new contacts?
A: Read everything to keep current. Don't be afraid to write letters
to people you read about and have never met.
Q: How can I distinguish myself?
A: Think of yourself as a "brand". You are different, better than
your competitors. To achieve this, seek a specialty. Some idea of interest
where you can accumulate knowledge. And hopefully, be able to look ahead
for new developments in your specialty. Given this expertise, you could
be offered some additional venues (speeches, articles, consulting, etc.).
and as you become better known, you will become more valuable. |
